IRC

So what kind of features does an IRC client need anyway? Sounds like a huge can of worms and I don't know how we would be able to please everyone.

You guys will have to help us out and give some details on what Digsby needs to do to not suck at IRC.

Simplicity

I think it would only need the basics, like what Pidgin has. Or the opera browser. The ability to see the list of rooms on a network, multiple network connections, etc. Nothing too fancy.

I Agreee^^

Basically just the ability to see who's in the room is all i would add

Simple is the key

Like the others have said; do it clean and simple. If I wanted advanced features, I'd go for a dedicated client. I just want to (auto-)join some channels (on multiple servers) and be able to chat with people both on the channel and in private. That's all basically.

Like most have said, keep it

Like most have said, keep it clean and relatively simple.

I only have a small idea of what is part of the "irc protocol" or what would be more dependent upon the client. With that in mind, a list of things that I think would be nice to have:
-Merging of irc contacts with other IM protocol nicks.
-ability to use multiple irc server connections
-mirc supported colors
-perform commands, commands that will run automatically when connecting to a server. Different commands allowed for each server. Used to authenticate to a nickserv or vhost, etc.
-solid history/logging support
-nick highlighting
-interaction with the nick list, right-click name to op/deop/voice/kick/ban/etc
-a method to change channel settings/modes/topic
-option to auto-rejoin on kick

That's all that comes to mind at the moment :) Most of those features I think would be considered 'basic' for any irc client.

I'm new to Digsby and am loving it, great work! If you add solid irc support that will allow me to ditch my last 3rd-party app/client for communication.

UI layout

I'm thinking something simple like this when viewing a channel, being able to right click the users to do some commands mentioned. Query would just be a normal IM conversation window.

IRC

If you do decide to add IRC Client into Digsby, be sure to make a separate window for it. I'm never too picky on IRC clients, as long as it works, I'll use it.

I'm pretty much always on IRC, and this would make things a whole lot easier.

Steam

Don't know if it's possible, but if you can support Valve's Steam IM (complete with notifications of which games your friends are playing) that'd be awesome. They've got 15 million users, so that has to count for something.

MySpace IM

Facebook IM isn't out yet, so we don't even know if its going to be Jabber or not (which would be really simple.. or.. do you guys know something we don't? ;)). MySpace has a lot of users and nice features.

Skype isn't good as just an IM client.. and right now, digsby would just be communicating with skype via an overlay or plugin of some sort, and it would make skype slower. IRC.. Personally, IRC is big, complex, and not really something for an IM client, but it is a nice small feature.

And Then, MySpace IM. MySpace has thousands of users, and since Digsby is already partially connecting to myspace im, it should be simple to finish up the users and messaging protocols, right?

as for Sametime, I've never heard of it.

(also, Valve's Steam IM would be sweet if possible)

Skype/xfire

Skype would be great addition for chat, but not if skype needed to be running, could launch the app for voice chat.

Xfire would be nice but the main feature is the ingame support which would be hard to replicate.

IRC would be nice but it's hard to make a good client that works properly on all networks, most networks don't conform to the rfc, also a few busy channels could easily lag most clients. If it was added it would have to support highlighting and on connect events.

MySpace IM

I think Myspace IM is a no brainer. I know it's the only reason I haven't deleted Pidgin. I have to say I was skeptical to even try Digsby since Pidgin has been a great IM client, but after experiencing the email and social site integration I'm in love Digsby. The only problem for me is NO MYSPACE IM..

Encryption

It is not an IM protocol but I miss being able to encrypt my conversations using the pidgin plugin. So far that is the only thing I have found lacking in Digsby.

Skype

Which IM protocol next? How about Linux and Mac?

I would think it would be advantageous to plug into the feeling that people out there have for Digsby at the moment by providing Linux and Mac clients. Then when you have all the territory covered, take over the world (and in passing all the IM protocols) :-)

Just a thought.

Jim!

Parallel

AFAIK, there's this thing called working in parallel, and that there's someone working on the Mac version at the same time as other devs are working on other stuff. Rumors say it's not coming tomorrow, though :(

More than working on another protocol...

...I'd really like you to optimize the code so I could actually use your product. It's awesome, but if I can't run cause it chews my system resources to pieces then it's really no good to me.

Please optimize Digsby!

Really?

Hmm.. Digsby is so snappy on my system (XP, 2GHz dual core, 2GB ram). Ok, it uses a bit of memory, but it's not like it's "chews my system resources to pieces". What are your system specs?

Hello

please add the serverless Instant Messenger

Thanks

Bonjour Support

I'd Like to see Bonjour support since i work for a Large design firm and we have a lot of Mac's this way we can communicate through our design processes with the project managers. This is the only thing preventing us from dropping pidgin for digsby on the PC's

Lots of issues

First off, it would be nice to see Bonjour and Steam support.

Second, let's PLEASE work on optimization first. This needs to run under 80 MB for once- preferably around 10 MB. Second, there should be Google Calendar support.

I Agree

I agree, there needs to be more focus on the optimization. Although I have noticed it's not as much of a system hog as it was in the early pre-beta stages.

NateON

Nateon Messenger Support

Perfect!

PSYC

I'd like to see a decent PSYC client :-D

Campfire

We use campfire as a web based chatroom. It is pretty popular. Unfortunately there are no offical APIs. for it.

XFire

Xfire would be great, especially if it was possible to chat in game. That would be so incredibly useful.

Closed :)
